We are a fast-growing startup specializing in innovative datacenter development, seeking a versatile Design Engineer to join our team. This fully remote role will support the VP - Engineering, Procurement & Construction and SVP – Real Estate in driving due diligence and design development. The ideal candidate will bring broad technical expertise, strong collaboration skills, and a growth mindset, with the potential to evolve into a Lead Engineer as the company scales. As a remote position, the candidate must be a self-starter, capable of working independently and delivering results in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the Site Acquisition team with initial engineering due diligence and site test fits.
- Establish and manage relationships with Utility Providers.
- Review and summarize technical due diligence reports for proposed sites including Phase I & II reports, Geotechnical studies and Alta Surveys.
- Collaborate with the VP - EPC to develop and refine datacenter designs, ensuring alignment with project goals, timelines, and budgets.
- Act as a design manager, coordinating multidisciplinary engineering efforts and overseeing design deliverables across architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.
- Serve as a subject matter expert, providing technical guidance and solutions in areas such as power systems, cooling technologies, structural integrity, and network infrastructure.
- Make initial municipality building and zoning inquiries, conduct design reviews, feasibility assessments, and risk analyses to ensure robust, efficient, and scalable datacenter solutions.
- Interface with internal teams, external consultants, and vendors to integrate cutting-edge technologies and best practices into designs.
- Support project planning, including scope definition, resource allocation, and milestone tracking.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or related field); advanced degree or AIA/PE license a plus.
- 7+ years of experience in engineering design, with a primary focus on datacenter, industrial, or mission-critical infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated expertise across multiple design specialties (e.g., MEP systems, structural engineering, power distribution, or thermal management).
- Proven experience developing projects from site selection through to capacity live, developing all phases of the datacenter lifecycle.
- Proven ability to manage complex design projects, balancing technical depth with coordination and oversight.
- Design experience in both North American and Western European datacenter markets.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to addressing challenges in a fast-paced startup environment.
- Excellent communication skills, with experience working cross-functionally and presenting technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
- Must be a self-starter, highly motivated, and able to thrive in a remote work setting with minimal supervision.
- Ambition to grow into an engineering leadership role, with an interest in team-building and strategic planning.
- Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., ASHRAE, Uptime Institute, LEED) and emerging datacenter technologies preferred.
